Carrillo: SíTV's Latina voice at the DNC

Wendy Carrillo at CNN studio

Thanks to winning her own nomination process, CSULA alumna Wendy Carrillo was selected to "crash" the Democratic National Convention as a national political correspondent for www.sitv.com and www.votolatino.org.

After receiving 7,277 of online votes, a panel of judges chose Carrillo to be one of only two "Crash the Parties" reporters out of more than 200 applicants throughout the nation.

Crash the Parties represents SíTV's efforts to foster the next generation of Latina/o leaders, by encouraging them to vote, voice their opinions, and actively participate at the conventions.

Carrillo, who received her bachelor's degree in communication studies at Cal State L.A., won an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. for a winners' ceremony. She also received expenses and press pass to cover the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Additionally, she traveled to Atlanta, Ga., to train as a reporter with the guidance of CNN's anchor Rick Sanchez.

Carrillo attended Roosevelt High School and East Los Angeles College. At Cal State L.A., Carrillo served as vice president of finance for Cal State L.A.'s student government, Associated Students, Inc., and was named an "Outstanding Delegate" at a Model United Nations conference in New York. She is a contributing writer for the University's LOUDMouth publication.

Currently, Carrillo hosts two public affairs programs for Los Angeles radio stations, Power 106 and Movin 93.9. She is also pursuing her master's degree in specialized journalism at USC this fall, focusing on Latina/o issues and the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election.

"Attending Cal State L.A. was one of the best education decisions I ever made. The personal attention I received from my professors allowed me to be a fully engaged student both academically and socially. As a Latina, first-generation college student and oldest of five girls, CSULA trained me to be a critical thinker and an advocate for my community. Because of CSULA, the choice for the young women I mentor is not IF I go to college, but WHEN I go to college. I would recommend CSULA to any student who wishes to be a part of a great education institution with outstanding faculty and staff and whose alumni base continues to grow dramatically every year. Go Golden Eagles!"
