Coming live to Cal State L.A. from the White House on Friday, Oct. 23, will be “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band—America’s oldest musical organization. Founded in 1798 by an Act of Congress, the Marine Band has performed for every U.S. President since John Adams.
Directed by Colonel Michael J. Colburn, the free Cal State L.A. concert—to be held 7:30 p.m. at the Luckman Theatre—will feature a suite from Sergei Prokofief’s Romeo and Juliet, Joseph De Luca’s “Beautiful Colorado” (with a euphonium solo), a baritone rendering of George Frideric Handel’s “Arm, Arm, Ye Brave” from Judas Maccabeaus, and three of John Philip Sousa compositions—including the national march of the United States, “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” There will also be a salute to the U.S. Armed Forces.
According to First Lady Michelle Obama, “The Marine Band has been just a tremendous resource for us. They have such great range. They can play everything from jazz to country, and they’ve made every event at the White House a special one.”
All advance tickets to this historic event have been distributed. However, music fans hoping to see the U.S. Marine Band at Cal State L.A. may have an opportunity for stand-by seating if they show up Friday, 0ct. 23.
