A new base for scientific discovery

Donor honored with naming

La Kretz Hall building.

La Kretz Hall—a three-story, 65,000-square-foot multidisciplinary facility on the Cal State L.A. campus—will be officially dedicated Tuesday, April 7, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. Tours of the facility will follow.

La Kretz Hall features contemporary science laboratories, equipment and tools, providing an environment to match the excellence of the University’s academic programs.

According to Cal State L.A.’s Provost Desdemona Cardoza, “The naming recognizes the generous gifts to the science programs at Cal State L.A. from the La Kretz Family Foundation.”

Morton La Kretz, a real estate developer, grew up in the University’s neighboring community of Boyle Heights. This new facility includes laboratories and classrooms that reflect Mr. La Kretz’s interest in furthering cutting-edge environmental science research at Cal State L.A. and locally.

The $42 million building opened for classes in Fall 2008. It accommodates the instruction and research activities for Cal State L.A.’s programs in the fields of biology, biochemistry, chemistry, environmental sciences, geology, health and nutritional sciences, kinesiology and microbiology.

Construction of La Kretz Hall began in 2004 with major capital funding, supplemented by private gifts. La Kretz Hall is the first wing of the Wallis Annenberg Integrated Sciences Complex at Cal State L.A. The second wing is currently under construction. Other private donors to the Complex include the Annenberg Foundation, Ahmanson Foundation, Ralph M. Parsons Foundation and Phyllis Marell. Combined, the two wings will encompass 120,000 square feet of classroom and laboratory space.

This project also involved Cal State L.A.’s Division of Academic Affairs; College of Natural and Social Sciences; College of Health and Human Services; Facilities Planning and Construction; Bernards construction company; and AC Martin architecture firm.
