In response to the changing landscape facing higher education in California and the nation,
California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State L.A.) reconvened its Strategic Planning
Coordination Committee in the Fall of 2010 to update the University’s 2008-2013 Strategic
The 2011-2016 University Strategic Plan provides a roadmap for the campus community that
outlines Cal State L.A.’s goals of improving student success during and after college, stronger
engagement with our community, and developing a more collaborative culture across campus.
The Plan is specifically designed to enable Cal State L.A. faculty, staff and administration to
provide access to, and deliver, highly-valued academic and co-curricular experiences, includ-
ing student engagement in research, scholarship, creative activities and other high impact
practices. It functions as a continuously-referenced resource that will guide our efforts over
the next five years in improving the retention and graduation rates of students, with a special
emphasis on closing the achievement gap and facilitating students’ post-collegiate aspirations.
The Plan also reaches beyond the confines of the campus. Its Community Engagement initia-
tive instructs the University to deepen current and further community partnerships that would
be mutually beneficial.
Reflecting the cohesive work of the Strategic Planning Coordination Committee during its
development, the Plan’s Collaborative Culture initiative was designed to promote the values of
open communication, transparency, and synergy. By working collaboratively, we can support
an environment that promotes trust, respect for differences, and advances institutional excel-
lence and innovation.
I want to thank all who have participated in the pro-
cess for their commitment to this effort as we work to
achieve our aspirations as a preeminent urban-serving,
comprehensive institution in the years to come. The
University Strategic Plan sets out a vision for the future
and provides guidance for decision-making that will have
a profound and positive impact on the academic experi-
ences of our students, and the region we serve.
