In order to measure progress towards this strategic initiative, the campus will monitor and track
the following metrics, with appropriate targets, as follows:
• Teaching and Learning Metrics
Using the High Impact Practices database, conduct an analysis of the number
of curricular and co-curricular experiences with civic/community engage-
ment as central components to establish a baseline.
Begin the process of adding Community Engagement (CE)/Service Learning
(SL) to transcripts in Golden Eagle Territory (GET).
Using opportunities created by General Education revision, new program
development and other future curriculum revisions, increase by 20% the
number of courses that have civic/community engagement as central
Complete the process of adding CE/SL to transcripts in GET.
• Student Engagement.
Using the Senior and National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)
surveys, baseline levels of student civic/community engagement will be
determined and gaps in participation will be identified.
Give students a leadership role in community engagement efforts by inviting
student participation on all relevant committees and task forces as appropriate.
Five years: There will be a significant increase in the percent of seniors who
report having engaged in community service or volunteer work on the Senior and
NSSE surveys, and gaps in native student participation will be reduced.
• Faculty Engagement
Conduct a survey of faculty to establish a baseline level of interest in the value
of community engagement and direct involvement in relevant projects.
Establish incentives and professional development support for faculty to en-
gage students in community-based research.
Revise existing and/or establish new policies that foster faculty engagement
with this initiative inclusive of recruitment, retention, tenure, and promotion.
Redo the survey to measure changes in priorities and career emphasis on
community engagement. In addition, gaps in involvement and interest in
community engagement will be addressed.
• Community Attitudes and Perceptions
In consultation with all major units and community representatives, design
and administer an assessment of public opinion using quantitative (e.g.,
surveys) and qualitative (e.g., focus groups, participatory research) method-
