We do not offer pre-admission advisement for students with international records. To be considered for admission, you must apply to our university.
- Submit an application and application fee before the international applicant deadline for the term to which you are applying.
- Take the English Proficiency Exams (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE), if required.
- Submit official copies of your record of grades and any degree or diploma received.
- Submit the Cal State L.A. Affidavit of Financial Support and related documents to the International Office, as soon as possible, but no later than a term’s stated deadline.
- Check with your Cal State L.A. major department for any additional requirements.
All communications from the University will be sent to you via email. After submitting your CSU Mentor application, you will receive an application submission confirmation email. Approximately 5 business days later, you will receive an acknowledgement email, informing you that we have received your application for admission. This notice will also contain your Campus ID Number (CIN). The acknowledgement will remind you about any missing documents needed to complete your application. All documents and other materials must be submitted by the stated deadlines.
After the acknowledgement notice, you will receive an email with your Personal ID Number (PIN) from the Records Office, which will allow you to check the progression of your application on our GET website. If you do not receive your PIN, you may send an email request to firstname.lastname@example.org. In the request, please include your Cal State L.A. CIN.
Once the University receives copies of all requested documents, please allow 6-8 weeks for evaluation and processing. Once a decision is made, you will be notified via email.
If you have attended institutions outside the U.S., you must submit copies of original academic documents in English and the original language. Certified English translations must be submitted in addition to the documents in the original language. Translations must be literal word-for word translations and should appear in a format similar to the original language document.
If you have attended any U.S. institution(s), you must make arrangements
to have official transcripts sent directly to Cal State L.A..
A freshman applicant (never attended any academic institution after completion of high school or upper secondary school) must submit copies of all secondary coursework.
If you are a transferring undergraduate and have attended post-secondary institutions, all post-secondary record of grades must be sent as well as copies of your secondary coursework. Please send copies of any diplomas received.
Graduate applicants must submit copies of post-secondary coursework completed and copies of all diplomas or degree certificates awarded.
Copies of original international records submitted by an applicant are not considered as official documents. These records may be used for evaluation purposes but you also must request that official records by sent directly from the institution(s) you attended to Cal State L.A..

Documents submitted to Cal State L.A. become university property, and cannot be returned to sender. If your educational institution only provides one set of official documents to students, you must bring the documents to our office for assistance. Situations will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
It is always best to send them as early as possible so that your evaluator can notify you if anything more is required. Early submission of your application and all documents required will ensure that you have enough time to be evaluated, and if admitted, processed through immigration. If you are an overseas student, please send all documents by the stated document deadline for the term to which you are applying to ensure adequate time for all processing. These documents may include academic records, English Proficiency exam scores, affidavit of financial support, etc.
The Affidavit of Financial Support and related documents should be sent to the International Office.
Can students with three year undergraduate degrees from India or Pakistan apply to a graduate program at Cal State L.A.?
As a general guideline, a three year degree from a recognized University
in India or Pakistan is not considered equivalent to a U.S. baccalaureate.
Graduates from these institutions may be admitted in undergraduate standing
if coursework is determined to be acceptable and meets undergraduate admission
requirements. Completion of a three year degree and a Post-Graduate Diploma
from a recognized institution may possibly be considered for graduate
Who is required to take exams to fulfill the English Proficiency requirement for admissions?
If you have not completed at least 3 years of full-time coursework at the high school/secondary level or above, at an accredited educational institution where English is the principal language of instruction, or have not completed a transferable college-level English Composition course from a United States post-secondary institution, with a grade of 'C' or better, you must obtain a minimum English Proficiency Exam score as follows:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 61 ibt or higher
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 44 or higher
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Band 5.5 or higher
If you do not possess a baccalaureate degree from a postsecondary institution where English is the principal language of instruction, you must obtain a minimum English Proficiency Exam score as follows:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 80 ibt or higher
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 53 or higher
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Band 6 or higher
- For TESOL program applicants: TOEFL (100 ibt) or IELTS (7.5)
NOTE: Exam scores are only valid for two years after the test date. Official scores must be sent to the University.
Does Cal State L.A. require official English Proficiency Exam scores?
Yes, we do require official test scores for the TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE exams. If you are admitted, your official exam scores must be received by the term’s final document deadline. Official scores must be sent to the University by the respective testing agencies.
Does Cal State L.A. accept an Institutional TOEFL score?
Cal State L.A. will only accept institutional TOEFL exams taken at the University from participants in the College of Extended Studies and International Program’s English Language Program.
Do I need to take an English Proficiency Exam if I have completed English Composition at my college or university?
If you are an undergraduate applicant, yes, the completion of a transferable college-level English Composition course from a United States post-secondary institution, with a grade of 'C' or better, will exempt you from these exams.
If you are a graduate with a bachelor’s degree from a college or university where the language of instruction is not English, you must take an English Proficiency Exam (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE). Completion of English Composition does not exempt you from needing to take these exams. Three years of education in an English speaking institution does not exempt you from taking these exams.
