About Us

Providing affordable and high quality educational experiences to our students is central to the CSULA mission. Housed within the College of Natural and Social Sciences, the HCAO was initiated in 1984 through a federal grant from the U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services as the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) office. HCOP ran a comprehensive pipeline program helping disadvantaged and underrepresented students gain acceptance to college and then to health professions programs. Over the years, HCOP served more than 1,700 disadvantaged and/or underrepresented students. Showcasing our student successes, between 1985 and 2009 over 780 CSULA students matriculated into a wide array of (allied) health professional careers including medicine, dentistry and pharmacy.

Currently under the direction of Dr. Robert Nissen, Associate Professor of Biology, the HCAO serves over 350 college students interested in pursuing health professions careers. The multi-year average success rate for CSULA students gaining admission to US Allopathic Medical Schools is 48%. The HCAO also continues working on health career pipeline activities aimed at helping students realize and then achieve their dreams of becoming healthcare professionals.
