We are currently hiring tutors.  Join our team!  We are likely to be able to place you at a school within a reasonable driving distance of your home.

Student tutors are assigned to one local area elementary, middle, or high school.  However, the majority of tutors are assigned to high schools in our service area.  Tutors must be available to tutor at any school to which they are assigned. Additionally, it is critical tutors possess reliable transportation. The tutoring schedule is flexible as individuals can choose to work from one to five days per week and up to 20 hours per week.  Tutoring is usually performed between the hours of 7:30 am and 3:30 pm. There is typically no evening tutoring available. Individuals can tutor the subjects of English and/or math and will be trained in PAD policies and procedures and general tutoring principles.  Additionally, tutors are required to attend AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) tutor training, parts I and II.  Also, ongoing training on a variety of topics will be provided on a regular basis throughout each quarter of employment in tutor meetings.  All tutors are required to attend these meetings. Tutors work under the general supervision of the Director of the PAD Program and under the direct supervision of the tutor coordinators.

In order to work as a tutor, an individual must possess the following qualifications:

Be an enrolled student at CSUSB (undergraduate or graduate) with at least a 2.50 GPA.

Be able to show proof of completion of the basic skills courses in mathematics and English (English 101 and Mathematics 110 or equivalent courses) with a "B" or better in the subject to be tutored.

Be able to demonstrate proficiency in math and/or English either through recommendation letters, course grades, and/or during the interview process.

Be able to provide a writing sample (English tutors only) which can be a paper written for a class, or any other type of written document deemed appropriate by the PAD Staff.

Have reliable transportation (copy of driver’s license and proof of insurance required).

Have an email account or be willing to obtain one (provided free by CSUSB).

Be willing to work at any school site.

Be able to demonstrate effective communication skills (evaluated based on recommendation letters, the interview process, and training program) and a comprehensive understanding of cross-age tutoring.

Be able to master effective tutorial skills as demonstrated by completing tutor training and test.

Have fingerprint clearance. The PAD Program is required by law to fingerprint all candidates. Clearance takes approximately 3 to 4 weeks from the date of fingerprinting.

$8.00 - $10.00 per hour depending on location of school site.  Tutors can work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic year; however, tutors may be able to work more than 20 hours per week during the summer.  Tutors are also compensated for their mileage at the rate of 34.5 cents per mile.

This position is year round (based on the local schools’ schedules) except for several weeks during the summer and fall. Tutors need to have completed general tutor training and have fingerprint clearance received by PAD Program in order to tutor at any school site. Fingerprint clearances are initiated upon hiring and may take approximately 3 to 4 weeks.
