KIN 101W: TAI CHI - Beginning

To help students to incorporate elements of "flow," "softness" and to develop the ability to operate through the "center" when we use any bodily movements.  The tradition maintains that this will improve everyone's health, strength, balance, and gracefulness, in proportion to each individuals sincere efforts.  The method is through practicing a series of slow motion movements from an old martial arts practice called taijiquan.  We will be able to learn a four minute long 24 form set during class.



Performance Objectives

1    Regular attendance and participation.
2    Listen to discussion of the basic concepts.  There will be a short written examination.
3    There will also be a requested demonstration of sustained segment of the exercise included in the examination.

Course Format and Required Materials:
Loose fitting and comfortable clothes.  No klunky shoes.


Meetings 1 & 2 Basic concepts: What is Tai Ji Quan ("q" pronounced "ch"), "Flow," "Soft," and "Centering," thus making possible each movement a whole body movement.  Guided experience of these concepts.  Establishing a basic "warm-up" evolving into the more specific forms of the Tai ji quan series.

Meetings 7 & 8 Learn forms 7 , 8
Meetings 9 & 10 Learn forms 9, 10, 11
Meetings 11 & 12 Learn forms 12, 13, 14, 15
Meetings 13 & 14 Learn forms 16, 17
Meetings 15 & 16 Learn forms 18, 19, 20
Meetings 17 &18 Learn forms 21, 22, 23, 24
Meetings 19 & 20 Review and discussion
