Introduction to Nippon Kempo (handout from sensei)

Student should wear attire that allows for uninhibited movement during class.  Karate Gi (uniform) optional. No shoes.  
Mouth piece will be mandatory for kumite (sparring) sessions.  Also a groin protectors (athletic cups) will be 
mandatory for male students.


  1. Kumite (tournament style boxing)

  2. Learn Japanese vocabulary and count 1 to 10 in Japanese.

  3. Learn how to tumble and fall

  4. Perform basic Kata(s)

  5. Answer questions from handout and concepts presented in class via a written exam


30% Participation
5% Assignments
20% Practical
15% Kumite
30% Written Final Exam

Participation (30%):
The nature of the course makes regular attendance of major importance.  Participation point will be given each day of class.  Evaluation of participation will be made in relation to individual effort and attainment of desired goals.  *If a student misses more than four classes his/her grade will be lowered one level.

Assignments (5%):
You will be responsible for turning in two written assignments.  The first assignment will be a short written paper describing your goals and intentions for taking this class.  The second involves filling out a waiver form.

Practical (20%):
The student will be evaluated in performing their kata(s) and all other concepts learned in class.

Kumite (15%):
The student will play in "mini" tournaments to demonstrate techniques learned in class (i.e. punches, kicks, blocks, and body movements).

Final Exam (30%):
The final exam will be comprehensive and will cover all reading assignments and concepts learned in class.


Changes may be made in this course outline and students will be notified of these changes before any occur.

Safety Precautions:
It is important for the student to understand that in any activity may lead to injury.  For this reason, please be sure you have insurance that will cover any incident that my occur during this class.

Final Date: Tuesday, December 10, 2002 @ 4:30 pm.
