Format Requirements

The top, left, and bottom margins will measure 1 1/2 inches and the right margin will be 1 inch. Page numbers can fall within this margin but must be at least 1/2 inch from the paper edge.

Typing of the thesis or project uses one side of the paper only, double spaced, with a 12 point size professional typeface, such as Times New Roman, Arial, or Courier. Only one size and one style of type may be used.

Preliminary pages precede the main text and are arranged in the following order: Form GS-13 (approval page), title page, copyright page, acknowledgment, abstract, table of contents, list of tables, and list of figures (if any). The main text is divided into chapters. When present, endnotes, glossary, list of references, and appendices follow the main text, and in that order. Each preliminary page, chapter page, endnotes, references and appendices, must begin on a new page.

Preliminary pages are numbered using lower case Roman numerals (ii, iii, iv, etc.).   Pages of the main text are numbered using standard Arabic numerals. All pages, including appendices are counted and numbered.

Chapters must be constructed and presented in a logical and consistent manner within the thesis. Follow individual department guidelines. If a specific style manual is required then that manual's requirements should be observed.

Citation format must follow the style manual or guidelines specified by the student's department and must be consistent within the thesis.  For help with references, citations, and plagiarism, attend a free Library Workshop.

Tables are comprised of data or statistical information, which are presented in column and row format. Illustrative materials such as graphs, charts, diagrams, maps, and photographs, are referred to as figures. Tables and figures are numbered consecutively, and in separate sequences, and conform to department guidelines.    Tables and figures are to be placed within the text, close to its first reference, or in appropriate appendices at the end of the thesis or project.


A draft copy of the thesis/project must be shown to a thesis reviewer for any format revisions. Each thesis must meet university format guidelines. Subject content, research quality, punctuation, and grammar are not checked. Appointments are recommended to meet with a thesis reviewer.

Three GS-13 forms (approval page) and two unbound copies of the thesis are required for submission. Once the thesis has been reviewed and all format revisions have been made, the final two copies can be printed onto white, 100% cotton, 20 or 24 lb. wt., watermarked paper. This paper can be purchased at most stationery or office supply stores.

The three signed GS-13 forms and final two copies are submitted to the thesis reviewer who will issue a bindery payment card. The card authorizes payment of the $30.00 fee at the University Cashier's Office. The payment card will be stamped and student returns the card to the thesis reviewer. The payment date is considered the completion date of the thesis.

The Graduate Studies Office informs the Registrar's Office, College Graduate Dean, and Graduation Office that the thesis has been accepted. The deadline to submit a thesis or project is the Thursday after finals week of each quarter.

The Library retains two copies of the thesis or project. One copy is housed in the Thesis Collection room and the second copy is housed in Special Collections.  

Binding of personal or department copies must be handled by the student. The Library can provide the name and address of their contract binder.

Thesis publishing can be done with UMI (University Microfilms International) through ProQuest. Dissertations and theses published with UMI are listed in the Dissertation Abstracts Online database, through which academic researchers can access published graduate work.

Submission Checklist:

Register for the quarter in which the thesis is to be submitted to the Library
Attend a thesis workshop
Prepare approval page (3 copies) and obtain committee memberís signatures
Schedule an appointment to have the thesis format reviewed
Submit final two copies, three signed approval pages, and pay $30.00 binding fee
