  • The Academic Mainframe Specialty Center, AMSPEC, is located at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. The center provides access to five large financial databases (Compustat, CRSP, Disclosure, IMF, and FRB) to students and faculty in business and economics throughout the California State University (CSU) system. AMSPEC is guided and promoted by the CSU's Business Instructional Computing Council (BICC).
Compustat--The Compustat files are produced by Standard & Poor's Institutional Market Services, A Division of the McGraw-Hill Companies, by extracting financial data from firms' annual and quarterly reports and from their SEC filings (such as the 10 K and 8K reports). AMSPEC refreshes the data quarterly. Compustat files consist of financial, statistical and market information on over 22,000 industrial and non-industrial companies.
CRSP--Published by the Center for Research in Security Prices, Graduate School of Business, University of Chicago, the database consists of stock market history files, AMSPEC holds a license for the Daily Master/Returns file (DA) which contains NYSE/AMEX/NASDAQ data. The NYSE data provides returns back to 1926, the AMEX returns are back to 1962, and the NASDAQ returns are back to 1972.
Disclosure--Published by Thomson Financial, the database contains Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) filings for 12,500 United States corporations dating back to 1988.
IMF--Published by International Monetary Fund, this database consists of International Monetary Fund time series data.
FRB--Published by NTIS, U.S. Department of commerce, this database consists of Federal Reserve Board (FRB) data and FDIC required annual bank report filings.
