Phil 327

Short Paper

Passage: Bartky "“Foucault, Femininity, and the Modernization of Patriarchal Power.”  Start p. 283 second to last paragraph "In the regime of institutionalized . . . "; End p. 284 first paragraph " . . .is a figure of comedy, not romance."

Write a well-organized, well-written essay (two pages, double-spaced). The essay should include a very brief introductory paragraph which states your thesis and outlines the overall structure of your paper.

(1)    What is the main idea that Bartky is claiming in this passage? What is an objection that she imagines being raised to her position? What is her response to this objection?

SUGGESTION: You will have to read the passage (and the whole article) more than once in order to answer these questions.

(2)    Critically assess Bartky's position. Do you think that she adequately addresses the imagined objection? Why or why not? Do you think that her position leaves out considerations that matter? Why or why not? NOTE: Give reasons for your position – do not merely state your opinion.

SUGGESTION: It is generally more effective to focus on one criticism and to develop it in greater depth than to focus on many criticisms, which you discuss only superficially.
