GENERAL INFORMATION

Dr. Moustafa comes to CSULA from San Jose State University. She has been at CSULA since 1997. Before joining San Jose State she was an experienced public school teacher. She has taught native and non-native speakers of English in kindergarten through adult education. She is a frequent conference presenter and has been an invited keynote speaker in numerous conferences across the U.S. and abroad. TEACHING

Dr. Moustafa teaches classes in literacy education in CSULA’s Teacher Credential Preparation program and in CSULA’s Reading MA/Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential program. She also assists teachers already in the field in implementing Whole-to-Parts Phonics Instruction, a new way of teaching early readers letter-sound correspondences explicitly and systematically consistent with a holistic, constructivist approach to teaching.

RESEARCH

Dr. Moustafa is interested in all aspects of first and second language literacy acquisition and education, but she is especially interested in how children learning to read an alphabetic language acquire a letter-sound system. Her 26 publications include Children’s productive recoding (Reading Research Quarterly, 30, 3, 1995), Beyond Traditional Phonics (Heinemann, 1997), Reconceptualizing Phonics Instruction in C. Weaver (Ed.) Reconsidering a Balanced Approach to Reading (National Council of Teachers of English, 1997), and Whole-to-parts phonics instruction: Building on what children know to help them know more with E. Maldonado-Colon (The Reading Teacher, 1999, 52, 5, 448-456). She is currently working on an updated version of her book Beyond Traditional Phonics. Her work has 49 known citations. Some unpublished articles by Dr. Moustafa may be seen on her website at http://instructional1.calstatela.edu/mmousta
