Dr. Kylie Hsu

Kylie HsuDr. Kylie Hsu is Emeritus Professor of Chinese and Linguistics in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, and the former Director of the Chinese Studies Center at California State University, Los Angeles. She is a recipient of the Distinguished Woman Award, the Outstanding Professor Award, and the Presidentís Distinguished Professor Award.

Educational Background: Dr. Hsu earned her B.A. in Linguistics (Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa) from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, her M.A. in Linguistics (Distinction) from California State University, Northridge, and her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics (UC System Presidential Fellow and the State of California Fellow) from the University of California, Los Angeles. 

Teaching Interests: Dr. Hsu's teaching interests include the contemporary use and the historical development of language and the sociocultural aspect of language learning. She teaches Chinese language, linguistics, translation, civilization, culture, and language for special purposes such as business and newspaper Chinese. She also teaches sociolinguistics such as language diversity in urban America, and contrastive analysis of Chinese and English structures. In addition, she has developed online learning materials through the support of internal and external grants.
