Reading Responses

Because the acquisition of language skills associated with reading is often an essential part of writing improvement, the Reading Project is an important part of this course.  You will write reading summaries on all of the reading assignments from The Next Los Angeles.

You should set aside about 30 minutes after completing each reading assignment to summarize what youíve read and what the reading made you think about. Here's the procedure you should follow:

1.          Write immediately after reading, or as soon as possible after reading.

Note: While your responses can be handwritten, I strongly encourage you to type them up on a computer and save the files. You might make use of your responses when you revise your essays.

2.          Do not worry about grammar or correctness.  I'll be looking for content only.

3.          Begin each journal entry by noting the following information:

Page numbers of reading assignment

4.          Below this information write your summary and response as follows:

5.          Summary:  In your summary, please tell me about the important points made in the reading as well as how the author establishes these points.  Give me enough information so that I know whatís going on, but please donít simply copy sections out of the article. Your summary should be about one handwritten page or about 1/2 page typed, double-spaced, 12 point type with one inch margins.

6.          Response:  The response is your opportunity to express what you think about what youíve read.  Try to connect what youíve read with your own thoughts and experiences. You can disagree with the author, offer your opinion about what is happening in the reading, or write about what the reading reminds you of in your own life. Your response can be any length, but at a minimum it should be about one handwritten page or about 1/2 page typed, double-spaced, 12 point type with one inch margins.

Although these summaries will not become part of the final portfolio, if you do not complete all of these assignments I will not accept your portfolio. If I do not accept your portfolio then you will receive a NC grade for the course.
