Filling Certain Jobs Remains Challenging Despite Labor Market.

The AP (10/5, Leonard) reports that it "might sound easy" to "fill jobs in nursing, engineering and energy research that pay $55,000 to $60,000, plus benefits," in the current job market. Yet despite an "unemployment rate nearing 10 percent, some employers can't find enough qualified people for good-paying career jobs." According to economists, "the main problem is a mismatch between available work and people qualified to do it." While "many of these specialized jobs were hard to fill even before the recession," the AP notes that "during downturns, recruiters tend to become even choosier, less willing to take financial risks on untested workers." Analysts say "it's become especially hard to find accountants, health care workers, software sales representatives, actuaries, data analysts, physical therapists and electrical engineers," and that "employers that demand highly specialized training - like biotech firms that need plant scientists or energy companies that need geotechnical engineers to build offshore platforms - struggle even more to fill jobs."

Indiana Defense Companies Cultivate Educators For Workforce Supply.

Indiana's  News Sentinel (7/20, Chapman) reported that 15 teachers took part in a "weeklong Industry to Educators Externship, where teachers can both tour and learn about day-to-day operations of Fort Wayne-based defense companies." Raytheon, BAE Systems, Northrup Grumman and ITT Defense & Information Solutions participated. Bruce Menshy of Raytheon told the educators that "out of about 200 new engineering positions Raytheon has added locally in the past 2 1/2 years...a third are new college graduates." He "said his division is trying to meet the challenge of growing, while replenishing the supply of baby boomers planning to retire in the next 10 years." He also told them, ""Engineering is a lifeblood of innovation and design. ... Engineers solve problems for customers, whether they are military or civil, and their work has the ability to grow or keep businesses in the area. We need to keep the pipeline going."

China Spending Up to $738 Billion On Clean Energy.

Bloomberg News (7/20) reported, "China, the world's biggest polluter, may spend about 5 trillion yuan ($738 billion) in the next decade developing cleaner sources of energy to reduce emissions from burning oil and coal, a government official said. The government will submit plans to develop cleaner energy, including nuclear power and gas from unconventional sources, in 2011 to 2020 to the State Council, or Cabinet, for approval, Jiang Bing, head of the National Energy Administration's planning and development department, said in Beijing today." The country will need "between 500 billion and 600 billion yuan annually to develop energy-conservation and low-carbon technologies, according to the government's 2050 China Energy and CO2 Emissions Report published last year." Furthermore, "The world's fastest-growing major economy will get more than 11 percent of its energy from non-fossil fuels by 2015, according to a statement released by the National Energy Administration today."
