Orff Schulwerk Certification Program
The Orff Schulwerk program, based on pedagogy employing Carl Orff’s music coupled with movement, provides music educators with a curriculum for teaching music through active music-making. This may include singing, movement, instrumental ensemble playing, and use of special instruments. Special topics include multicultural music traditions, folk dance, and storytelling.
Each year, Orff trainees gather at the Cal State L.A. campus to sing, dance, create and play for two weeks in beautiful Southern California, the entertainment capital of the world. The summer Orff program at Cal State L.A. was established in 1991 by Cal State L.A. Professor of Music Education, Dr. Millie Burnett, an early Orff Schulwerk educator in the U.S., President of AOSA, and founder of the Los Angeles Chapter of AOSA. The tradition has continued under Cal State L.A. Professor of Music, David Connors. The specialist faculty are carefully selected music teachers from public and private schools in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Pasadena, the Bay Area and beyond. In the summer program, Orff-Schulwerk Certification Levels 1, 2 and 3 are offered in a rotating cycle. Typically, Level 1 is offered each year, Level 2 every other year and Level 3 every third year. These courses can also be integrated into Cal State L.A.'s Masters of Music Education in the regular academic year.
The program typically runs for two weeks in early July, with classes from 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.- 4:30 p.m. To see a past sample, click here for a Summer 2013 brochure.
Note: Orff will not be offered at any level in Summer 2014. We hope to resume in 2015.
Unfortunately Cal State L.A. will not offer the Orff Schulwerk Certification program in Summer 2014 at any level. This is the first time in many years that we won't be hosting this excellent program and is due to external policy (in Summer 2013, we did not reach enrollment levels mandated by the Orff Schulwerk Association - http://aosa.org/index.html ). We plan to be back in 2015 with Level I and look forward to working with you then, as we rebuild the program.
