From the Service-Learning and Community Engagement at CSULA, Strategic Plan 2011-2016
VISION: CSULA will be known for leveraging knowledge and resources in collaboration with our local, national and global communities and for graduating students who have learned how to put their knowledge into action for the benefit of those communities. We will be recognized nationally and awarded the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement.
MISSION: Our mission is to prepare students for effective civic participation that sustains a democratic society and enhances the quality of life in local, national, and global communities. We are dedicated to:
- Promoting a culture of engaged teaching and learning that values public scholarship and knowledge that has a positive impact on the community.
- Creating opportunities for students and faculty to engage with the community in civic and political processes.
- Developing sustainable and mutually beneficial community-university partnerships.
During the next five years, we will strive to achieve the following goals:
Goal 1: Align institutional priorities, processes, resources, and image to support community engagement.
Goal 2: Make civic and community engagement a cornerstone of the curriculum. [CSULA SP 1.2]
Goal 3: Involve the community in defining both long- and short-term civic and community engagement priorities and practices.
Goal 4: Appoint, support, develop, and recognize a strong core of faculty committed to CE.
Goal 5: Develop a campus-wide coordinating infrastructure (center/office) to support and advance civic and community engagement.
Goal 6: Develop and implement mechanisms for systematically assessing the impact of CE on community partners, students, faculty, and the University.
