newMHIRT Summer Program- Application Deadline February 10, 2006

Minority Recruitment and Retention Strategies- NIGMS website that is intended to serve as a resource for NIGMS-funded training grant program directors in their efforts to improve representation of minorities in their training programs. This webpage may be of interest to you and your students. Comments and questions are welcome and can be entered on an online feedback form or sent to any NIGMS staff member who manages training grant programs.

Project 1000- A national program created to assist underrepresented students applying to graduate school. Students may apply to up to seven of the over 88 participants Project 1000 institutions by using one application. Participation is FREE of charge to individual students and to the participating institutions.

SEM-ED Office-The Office for the Advancement of Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Education (SEM-Ed), was created to support and assist existing SEM-Ed programs at CSULA in their effort to attract, retain and graduate students interested in SEM fields.

Cal State LA Southern California Bioinformatics Summer Institute- Students will participate in and extensive education program consisting of course bridging molecular life sciences and computer science to achieve a common goal. Application deadline March 1, 2004.

FASEB- The Federation of American Socities for Experimantal Biology (FASEB) has funding for summer research positions. Round trip air fare included, transportation.

SURP- Summer Research Opportunities in Advanced Materials Research Laboratories at Virginia Tech. Paid a $5,000 stipend for a eleven and half weeks. You are responsible for travel and housing.

UCSF - Summer Programs - The UCSF Summer Research Training Program (SRTP) was designed for college students planning to earn a PhD in the health sciences. The program seeks to encourage students to pursue research careers in the biological, biomedical, and behavioral sciences, and provide them with a unique traning experience that will enhance their competitiveness for graduate school.

Southwestern Univeristy Summer Program-To provide an intensive research training experience for college students that leads to an understanding of the planning, discipline, and teamwork involved in the pursuit of basic answers to current questions in the biological sciences.

NIH/IMSD scholars summer at the University of Arizona-The University of Arizona Graduate College is offering summer research opportunities focusing on health issues that affect minority communities in a disproportionate manner, e.g., diabetes, cancer, AIDs, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and other diseases.

Biomed RAP- The Biomedical Research Apprencticeship Programs is a 10-week summer research program for underrepresented minority and disadvantaged college students interested in biomedical research at Washington University. It's a 10 week program (housing included) and a stipend of $3,000.

University of Utah- Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Chemistry at Uni. of Utah. The program starts June 2 and runs for 10 weeks. Stipends, housing and travel money included.

New York University- The Howard Hughes Honors Summer Institute offers summer research in genomics, bioinformatics, and computational biology. Stipend, supply money, room and board, and travel costs.

University of Wisconsin-Madison- Molecular and Environmental Toxicalogy Center Summer Research Program. Includes stipend, travel, housing and a food allowance.

Scholarships and Fellowships

UNCF/Gates Millennium Scholars Program- United Negro College Fund (UNCF)-Provides financial assistance to 1,000 new minority (African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American) college students per year in mathematics, science, engineering, education or library science. The goal is to expand access to higher education & to encourage students to complete college & continue into Master's & Ph.D. programs. Students must have a 3.3 GPA, be enrolled full-time in an accredited college or university, & have significant financial need. http://www.uncf.org/scholarship/gates.asp

 

HENAAC- Scholarships available for Engineerign, Math and Science Students. Applications must be postmarked by April 23, 2004.

NIGMS-Predoctoral Training Grant Program- This web page provides the name, address, and telephone number of the curretny program director of each predoctoral research training grant.

National Institutes of Health- The NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral and social science health-related research. The program is designed to improve access to education leading to research careers for those who have had fewer opportunities than others.

ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship-The ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship is aimed at highly competitive students who wish to pursue graduate careers (Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D) in microbiology.

ASM Minority Undergraduate Research Fellowship-The American Society for Microbiology Minority Undergraduate Research Fellowship program (MURF) is aimed at highly competitive minority undergraduate students who wish to, and have demonstrated the ability to pursue graduate careers (Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D.) in microbiology

Robert D. Watkins Minority Graduate Fellowship- The Robert D. Watkins Minority Graduate Fellowship is aimed at highly competitive minority graduate students who are enrolled in a Ph.D. program and who have completed their graduate course work in the microbiological sciences

ASM/NCID Postdoctoral Fellowship- The goal of ASM/NCID Fellowship is to support the development of new approaches, methodologies and knowledge in infectious disease prevention and control in areas within the public health mission of the CDC

Lucent Fellowship Program-The Graduate Research Program for Women (GRPW) is designed to identify and develop research ability in women and to increase female representation in science and engineering

Predoctoral Fellowship Awards for Minority Students-Postbaccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) Fellowships provide opportunities for recent college graduates to spend a year engaged in biomedical investigation at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland and selected off-campus locations.

The Ford Foundation with the National Academies-accepting application for predoctoral, dissertation and postdoctoral fellowships for minority scholars in the arts, humanities and sciences.

Einstein- Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. Applications to SURP are available beginning November 1st for an application deadline the following February 15th. Since admission to the program is very competitive, students are urged to submit their applications as early as possible and see that the supporting materials are received in the Sue Golding Graduate Office by the application deadline.

NIH for Minority Student Development Graduate Scholars Programs at University of Arizona-The intention of the NIH/IMSD Scholars program is to provide five (5) years of funding,  an out-of-state tuition waiver, individual health insurance, and other support as long as satisfactory progress is made toward the Ph.D. The first year, Scholars receive $18,000, an in-state registration waiver, rotate through 3-4 research laboratories prior to choosing a research mentor, and $1,000 in travel funds to attend a research conference. 

Yale Univeristy- Biolgical and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBS)- BBS represents an amalgamation of the faculty in the Departments of Cell Biology, Cellular and Molecular Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Genetics, Immunobiology, Microbial Pathogenesis, the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program, Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry, Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, and Neurobiology and also draws relevant faculty from various clinical departments.

NYU- Biology Graduate Program- The Ph.D. program is a full-time program designed to develop independent research scientists with a thorough training in modern biology and stresses the development of quantitative, mechanistic approaches to biological research.

Stanford Graduate Program- Graduate Admission Requirements for admittance vary greatly among the departments and programs offering graduate work. Here are some: Chemisty, Biochemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Psychology.

Montana State University- Bozeman Graduate Program in Chemistry and BiochemistryGraduates in Chemistry and Biochemistry should have a broad knowledge and under- standing of all the major areas of chemistry: Analytical, Biochemistry, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry.

University Of Buffalo, NY- Grad Program in Molecular Pharmacology and Cancer Therapeutics- offers graduate students the opportunity to study a range of topics in cancer biology and/or cancer therapeutics at the molecular, cellular and biochemical levels. The program is integrally associated with the Grace Cancer Drug Center on the campus of Roswell Park Cancer Institute

Harvard Medical School-Ph.D training in Neurobiology-The Program in Neuroscience, administered through the Division of Medical Sciences at Harvard Medical School, is one of the five offered interdisciplinary programs leading to the Ph.D. degree in medical sciences through the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Harvard University

EMORY- Graduate Program in Chemistry- All students offered admission receive stipend support as teaching or research assistants and full tuition scholarship, and a small number of special fellowships are available for top applicants.

GENETICS at University of Georgia- The research and teaching programs of the Department of Genetics is closely linked, providing graduate students with strong scientific backgrounds and excellent laboratory research skills.

Mayo Graduate School- Admissions and application information.Mayo Graduate School (MGS) provides advanced scientific training toward Ph.D. degrees in biomedical research in a resource-rich, collaborative environment dedicated to scientific discovery.

University of Wisconsin-Madison- The program's primary objective is to train graduate students in molecular and cellular biology and the basic principles of pharamacology.

University of the Pacific- The University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA offers a fellowhsip program to students interested in graduate degree in chemical or pharmaceutical/biological sciences. For more info. email lanorton@uop.edu

Molecular and Cellular Biology at University of Minnesota- A joint admissions porgram that allows entering graduates students to choose between faculty in two graduate programs.

Vanderbuilt Univeristy- Graduate Study and Postdoctoral Training in Toxicology and Carcinogenesis.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign-Graduate study in Biochemisty, guaranteed financial support, including full tuition and partical fee waiver throughout the graduate program.

USC- Graduate Study in Chemistry; Biological Chemistry, Chemical Physics, Inorganic Chemistry, Nanoscience, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Surface Chemistry, and Theoretical Chemistry.

UC Riverside- Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences. This program offers financial assistance available to qualified applicants. Research Assistanships, Chancellor's and Dean's Distinguished Fellowships, Nonresident Fellowships, Teaching Assistanships

Oregon Health and Science University- Molecular and Medical Genetics Program. The Ph.D. program prepares students for a professional career in researchand teaching. The training provides a multi-disciplinary education in molecular, cellular, and developmental genetics with emphasis on human disease.

Cornell University- The Weill Graduate School is one of the world's premiere training grounds for biomedical researchers. Located in New York City, on Manhattan's East Side. Programs in Biochemistry and Structural Biology, Cell Biology and Genetics and Immunology and Molecular Biology. All receive a fellowship of $22,030 covering tuition, fees and living expenses, free health insurance and housing.
