POSITION: Graduate Assistant
STARTING DATE: Immediate opening available for Fall quarter
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The Graduate Assistant must be enrolled in the LAS graduate program and be making satisfactory progress toward completion of the MA degree; have comprehensive research experience in use of library resources and journal databases; be able to interact warmly and supportively with students and faculty; have good writing skills; and be able to assist and train students who are taking LAS/CHS 335 as part of their upper division GE theme courses. Due to the nature of the course material, the Graduate Assistant should be comfortable discussing racial and ethnic issues with students of diverse cultural backgrounds. Applicants may not be employed elsewhere full-time.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Interest in a future teaching career at the college level is a plus.
DUTIES: The Graduate Assistant helps guide students with their individual research and writing assignments; explains Portfolio assignments and standards; monitors student attendance and progress with assignments; assists the instructor with class administration, including audio-visual and computer set up prior to each Thursday 6 p.m. class meeting; maintains scheduled office hours; helps identify students needing special assistance; and, participates in the evaluation of students’ research and writing assignments over a period of days following the final exam.

SALARY RANGE: The office of the dean of the College of Natural and Social Sciences determines the hourly rate for graduate assistants. Funding for this one-term position will be contingent upon LAS 335 enrollment over a certain threshold, a determination usually reached by the Dean of Natural and Social Sciences during the first week of classes. It is estimated that the position will be for an average of five hours per week for eleven weeks, with the actual work schedule more heavily concentrated in the final week.
