POSITION: Graduate Assistant for the Department of Biological Sciences.  The department periodically has graduate assistant positions available to assist in the grading of the Anatomy and Physiology courses (BIOL 200A/B).  The department also has a Graduate Assistant position for an individual who maintains the aquarium room and live animals required for Introductory Biology (BIOL 100A) and another Graduate Assistant position to assist in the laboratory preparations for Immunology and Serology (MICR 304). 

STARTING DATE: Beginning Fall quarter 2011and on-going.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences.  A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biological Science, or closely related field, from an accredited institution of higher education.  Graduate Assistants must be registered in a CSU graduate degree program and must be enrolled in courses towards the completion of that graduate degree during the appointment period.  For the BIOL 200AB position, applicants should have previous course work or academic experience in anatomy and physiology and good writing skills. For the BIOL 100A position, applicants should have experience working with aquaria and invertebrate marine organisms. For the MICR 304 position, applicants should have a strong foundation in laboratory skills including media and solution preparation and good aseptic technique.  Applicants should have the ability to relate well to others within the academic environment, and demonstrate ability and/or interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural environment. 

Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The applicant should display an ease and comfort in working with students of all ethnicities and have good oral and written communication skills. Good library research, writing, people/social skills as well as an ability to mentor undergraduate students is essential.

HIRING CRITERIA:Priority will be given to individuals who have excellent oral and written communication skills. 

DUTIES: Under the general supervision of the faculty member, the Graduate Assistant for the BIOL 200A/B courses will perform clerical or other routine tasks such as grading examinations, recording grades, and participating in the evaluation of students’ work and other related tasks. For the BIOL 100A course, the Graduate Assistant will maintain the aquarium room and provide live animals as required for the class.  For the MICR 304 course, the Graduate Assistant will assist in the set up and preparation of laboratory materials for the course.

SALARY RANGE: Current Graduate Assistant rate for an average of 5-10 hours per week.
