Position: Graduate Assistant

Starting Date: Beginning Fall quarter 2011 [and on-going]

Minimum Qualifications: Graduate Assistants must be registered in a CSU graduate degree program and must be enrolled in courses towards the completion of that graduate degree during the appointment period.  Applicants should have the ability to relate well to others within the academic environment, and demonstrate ability and/or interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural environment.

Students may be pursuing degrees in departments compatible with Latin American Studies, such as Chicano Studies, History, Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Spanish, or others.

Preferred Qualifications: The applicant should display an ease and comfort in discussing racial issues with students of all ethnicities. Good library research, writing, people/social skills as well as an ability to mentor undergraduate students is essential.

Hiring Criteria:Preference will be given to candidates who have taken courses about Latin America, who display an ease and comfort in discussing racial issues with students of all ethnicities, and who possess strong research and writing skills.

Duties: Under the general supervision of the faculty member, the Graduate Assistant will provide assistance in the instruction of students by conducting small discussion groups related to large lectures course activities, may assist in handling equipment, maintaining office hours to provide direct individual contact between student and graduate assistant, clarifying course material or course content for students. Will perform clerical or other routine tasks such as grading examinations, recording grades, etc.; assisting faculty with research and preparation of course materials; participating in the evaluation of students’ work and other related tasks.

Salary Range: Current Graduate Assistant rate for an average of 7 hours per week.
