As many of you know, Cal State LA will convert to a semester system calendar starting Fall 2016. Faculty and staff are working hard to offer the best possible semester-system curriculum for our students and to develop advising plans to help students transition from quarters to semesters. By January 2015, the curriculum conversion process will be complete and the e-Catalog will be published online mid-July, 2015. Between August 1, 2015 and July 31, 2016 each student who needs to transition from the quarter system to the semester system will meet with an advisor to develop an Individualized Advisement Plan that maps out the student's academic requirements for a timely graduation. More information about semester conversion can be found on the University's Semester Conversion Website.Note that if you are planning to graduate before Fall 2016, this will not affect your graduation.
To ensure a high quality education for our students each department is diligently working on converting the curriculum for their undergraduate and graduate programs. In addition, several task forces have been established to bring ECST faculty and staff together to work on college-wide issues related to semester conversion.
- GE Task Force (led by Dr. Jane Dong) - will develop a GE proposal for the college that incorporates the core principles of liberal learning outcomes while taking into consideration the ABET and ATMAE accreditation requirements.
- Lower Division STEM Task Force (led by Dr. Vladimir Akis) - will facilitate coordination and communication between departments regarding the lower division STEM packages that each program will require taking into consideration how we can best promote transfer student success as well as a common language for engineers.
- Student Advising Task Force (led by Dr. Keith Mew and Ms. Evelyn Crosby) - will identify and address student concerns about conversion, as well as how to best provide advising services during the transition.
All faculty and staff are invited to attend task force meetings. Faculty and staff can find more information about the ECST conversion process, including access to task force reports, task force meeting times, and discussion boards, at the ECST Semester Conversion moodle site.
