Curriculum Mapping

Curriculum mapping creates a framework for curricular conversion that focuses on student learning. It has the potential to be a vital component in making decisions about teaching and learning. The utilization of mapping is at the core for addressing curricular issues at both the course and the program level.

Curriculum Mapping emphasizes the balance between what is planned and what is actually occurring in individual courses and across the program. The mapping process allows one to view any possible gaps, repetitions, or absences in the proposed curriculum.

The process begins with looking at the Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) for the program. These are listed on one axis of the map. The courses in the program are listed on the other axis in a close approximation of when they are taken in the program. For each program SLO, determine in course(s) the SLO is introduced and indicate that on the map with an I. Subsequently, determine in which course(s) the SLO is Developed (and indicate this with a D), and in which course(s) it is Mastered (and indicate this with an M).

A quick examination of the map will reveal any gaps, repetitions, or absences. Curriculum maps are designed to provide authentic evidence of what has happened or is being planned to happen in a program. Frequent and collaborative revisiting and reviewing of curriculum maps continually improves student learning.

An example of curriculum mapping may be found at the link below. This is for a Business Administration program and it was developed by the faculty at New Jersey City University. This map uses the symbols:
I = Introduce
R = Reinforce
E = Emphasize
