How do I grade student writing?
Prompts may be used to generate discussion postings, a graded essay, or a research paper. It is worth practicing writing prompts as good ones take time to develop but yield better student responses.
A rubric sets the standard, or criteria, for what you are measuring. Good rubrics make grading easier!
- A rubric must reflect your assignment prompt. Make sure you are truly evaluating what you ask students to do.
- Clarify your criteria, which form a natural rating scale. Evaluate each criterion separately.
- Generally speaking, repeat assignments (postings) call for shorter rubrics. High stakes assignments such as research papers, require lengthier rubrics.
- It's good practice to share your rubrics with students so they know how they will be graded.
